Ok ladies, I need cleaning advice?

I have a huge problem keeping my house clean. It's just me my husband and 3 dogs, but our house looks like we have 6 kids living there unsupervised! I need to know how you ladies keep your house clean. I clean everything and pick everything up and it looks great but it seems like it goes directly from clean to trashed. How do you stop this process? Its depressing and I get to the point where I don't see why I should bother. Do you work on it 24/7 or is there a day you set aside? How do you get your husband to not just throw things on the floor?? Any advice/help is greatly appreciated!
